How shitty is your water today?

February 27, 2006 · 14 Comments

Life sucks when shit hits the fan. But what if there’s shit in the water?

7 districts in Selangor and North Kuala Lumpur have reportedly been affected by foul smelling water. Details are sketchy, but according to a report by China Press, it is due to a problem with the 2nd largest water treatment/filteration plant in Selangor.

Residents in affected areas have complained of smells ranging from dead rat to faeces.

The matter is being investigated by the authorities and a statement will be issued by tomorrow.

Rock-climbing. A New Found Passion.

February 27, 2006 · 3 Comments

Not someone who would stay at home and rot, I joined race partner Stanley for rock-climbing at Camp 5, One Utama last Friday. I have always been intrigued about scaling walls and rock, although I am shit scared of heights. I live on the 17th floor and you will not find me lingering on the balcony for long.

I distinctly remember being absolutely quiet on my cable car ride in Langkawi. As the winds blew and the car rocked, my palms were completely soaked with sweat. To think that I would be naturally comfortable with heights with my 6-foot 1 inch frame. Hah. Life’s little surprises.

Strangely enough, the fear of heights did not prevail on my first ever attempt at rock-climbing. After signing up and collecting my harness and climbing shoes at the counter, Stanley gave me a brief on how to wear the harness before introducing me to the Boulder. A boulder is exactly what it is – a big, fat piece of rock, with a matted surface on the ground for safe landings. It’s a good place to start climbing, and to practise technique. I did a couple of tries, but not without some difficulty at first. Had to get use to getting a grip with my fingers, and also learning how to place my feet. And most importantly, to ’step up’, as they called it.

Rock-climbing, is not about strength of your limbs, as I learned, it is all about technique. Hands are used primarily for balance, as your legs ’step up’ to the next level.

Having succeeded in climbing the boulder several times, Stanley took me to the 10m lateral wall. He thought me how to secure the rope to my harness with proper knots, and showed me how belaying works. Stanley showed me basic safety procedures and I practiced tying the knots and securing the harness.

With some support, I went up. I got up three quarters of the way but my upper body and arms felt fatigued. Stan earlier thought me how I could ‘hang and relax’ with one arm and I used that to regain some strength. Stan urged me on, and I finally reached the apex.

I think I gave Stan a huge wedgie, as I came down, him supporting my rope. Hahah. I watched Stan as he did one climb, a quick one too. Experienced as he is, he told me it wasn’t the best of techniques he used, and somewhat cheated by using strength of his arms to pull himself up.

After resting for a couple of minutes, I went up again, this time smoother and quicker. My first ever climbing experience, and I was hooked from then on. I plan to come by every week and perhaps join as a member very soon. The adrenalin rush is addictive, and I like the fact that it is a huge challenge.

More climbing to come, folks!

When Gaban Z meets Ultraman, All Hell Breaks Loose!

February 20, 2006 · 4 Comments

My best friend sent me this. It’s probably old, but heck – when I read it, I not only flipped and rolled on the floor, but it made me think of those impossible moments amongst friends. You know, the get-together moments when someone starts a topic (usually rubbish), but it continues seamlessly, flowing through the most ridiculous scenarios, and such. Ever had that? Hahahaha. Funny, real funny! It’s like a page off Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. Completely and absolutely improbable, but funny.

Gaban Z lawan Ultraman Tanduk

Tak dek respek ke, o’ang nak tido?”

“Ultraman Tanduk! Aku Gaban Z! Aku cabar kau bertarung dengan aku!”

“Oi,” kata Ultraman Tanduk sambil menggaruk bontot kiri yang tiba-tiba terasa gatal. “Apa hal ko ni ha? Dah, pegi balik. Mak ko pangge tu ha.”

TMNut on WIKI

This is hilarious. How’s that for a vote of confidence? By the way, my crawling net speed issue is still unresolved. Apparently it is due to a port problem which is directly related to the main switch. They are supposedly awaiting a switch upgrade which they are testing and pending approval.

Hah. Whatever. Just make sure it gives me at least 800Kbps. And in a huff, please!

A1 GP: Congrats, A1 Team Malaysia!

February 13, 2006 · Leave a Comment

In a race that saw many cars frolic in the gravel traps, Alex Yoong, racing for Team Malaysia, finishes on the podium for the very first time.

A1 Team Canada fought their way from back of the grid to win the A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Sentul Circuit, Indonesia giving them their first win of the season.

The A1 GP in Indonesia was action-packed from start to finish, with enough collisions, overtaking and close-racing to keep the 32,000 spectators on their feet throughout the race.

Second place man Alex Yoong said: ‘I’m elated for the team. The car was very strong. We should have pitted earlier though, we could have been even closer. This is what the Series is all about, there was so much overtaking, the cars are strong and built to overtake. Jos Verstappen and I had a real cat and mouse fight as we made our way through the field. It is such a good result for the team and for our new sponsor Proton. Having Proton on board has made such a difference for the team, as we have been able to concentrate on the racing rather than getting to the next race.’

A1 Team Malaysia, currently lies 9th in the 25-nation ‘World Cup’ of motorsports with 49 points. Congrats Alex and A1 Team Malaysia!

Streamyx. The World Waits…

February 12, 2006 · 2 Comments

One mention and thought of TMNet and Streamyx, makes my blood boil. Barely 3 weeks of having it installed, it has got my world in slow motion. My connection has never gone beyond 450Kbps. For a 1Mbps subscription line, taking to account a 25% speed loss from routing, yada yada, I should get at least 700K. But oh no, I get way below that.

Tonight has by far been the worst night ever, connection as low as 118Kbps. That’s crap. This is the 21st century. While each household in Japan gets 10Mbps, we 118Kbps. That sucks. That’s 100 times slower than our Oriental friends.

It isn’t like I am expecting lightning speeds, just close to what I pay for. If I don’t see an improvement over the next week, I swear I am cancelling the line!

The world waits…
